For guitar players? Tube amp questions...?
I want to get a tube amp that's about 40-60 watts (I don't need more, but if I good deal with more, I'll check it out) and thats under $550. I have a couple of questions:
1. Is the difference in tonality between a solid state amp and a tube amp significant enough to pay $100+ more for?
2. If I buy a distortion stomp box, will it defeat the whold purpose of a tube amp (will I loose tone?)
3. What are some good tube amps, according to my needs at the top?
4. If you have a tube amp, tell which kind, what you have hooked up to it, and how it sounds.
Thanks!
1. TUBE is the way to go if you are serious about playing. They are heavier, louder, richer amps and are worth every penny over a solidstate version. If you play in a band, solidstate amps get terrible feedback and nasty gain effects if you crank it up to compete over the din.
2. Professional musicians use effects pedals with tube amps. In most cases, they sound even better with a tube amp than with a solid state.
3. Peavey ValveKing, you could probably pick up a used Fender Twin Deluxe, Deville, or Blues Jr. or a used VOX AC15. all of these amps are very good.
4. I've played out of a number of things, but my fave combo so far is a VOX AC30 with my pedal board (Boss OD20, DD6, TU2; Vox wah; and Ernie Ball Volume Pedal) Plus it helps that I am absolutely in love with my guiar (1972 RI Fender Telecaster Deluxe)
