Installing Humbuckers on a Tele with two Single Coil pickups?
I own a Squier classic vibe thinline telecaster that I want to add Lace sensor humbuckers to on the bridge, but I only have a single coil on the bridge. How hard would it be to add a humbucker there? And also, does the chrome case around the neck pickup interfere with the playing at all? If so, I want to remove it. Thank you for listening.
If you want a full size humbucker rather than a stacked or rails humbucker that just drops in you will need the top of your tele routed so one can fit. You will also need a new bridge, preferably one that will attach to the same mounting holes already in the guitar. Unless, of course you decide your old bridge uses the wrong kind of string saddles. Then it might be worth the extra modifications (plugging the old mounting holes and re-drilling).
Many people think you will get higher output and better high end response if you remove the bridge pickup cover. It's a tiny change compared to a new pickup and you have the cosmetic issue of the exposed bobbin and windings. My tele was custom made from parts and I have gold hardware so I had the chrome piece left off. The pickup cavity was painted flat black so it showed up less.
