Fender Stratocaster pickups?
Hi there. I will be buying a strat month but can't decide whether to get an American Standard or an American Deluxe. At the moment I am leaning towards a Deluxe but I am curious to know the difference between the 'American Strat Single Coil pickups' in the Standard and the 'Samarium Cobalt Noiseless' in the deluxe.
My advice is to replace the pickups on the American Standard and or the American Deluxe with better pickups. The pickups on the American Standard (Alnico 5) are okay, for they get the job done. The Noiseless pickups are absolute garbage and would not recommend them.
When Fender came out with the Fender Vintage Noiseless around 1998 (I was 20 back then), I was all geeked up when I read about how great they sounded according to Fender Frontline Magazine.
I got to try them first hand when those pickups came out on the American Deluxe series. Thinking that these pickups were going to be "the holy grail of pickups," I was very disappointed on the sound they produced: Bright, crisp, clean, and too thin sounding. Needless to say, I wasn't sold on them. In other words, my Fender Custom Shop '69 pickups (as noisy as they are) would blow them out of the water.
What I would do is change the pickups on both guitars. I'm a straight single coil guy myself. You can go with the Fender Custom Shop Pickup models: The 54's, The Fat 50's or The 69's. You can't go wrong with those three.
If you want noiseless pickups, me personally, I lean towards Dimarzio Pickups. These three pickups I would recommend from them are the Area series: The '58, '61, and '67 Pickups. To me, Dimarzio hit the jackpot on those pickups.
If you want "Authentic Vintage Noiseless" pickups, Kinman Pickups are the hot ticket. Expensive, but worth ever penny. The pickups they have for the Strat are: Traditionals (mid-late 50's ), Blues (early 60's), Woodstock (late 60's) and the Hank Marvin set.
I like the American Standard (especially the new ones) and the American Deluxe guitars that Fender has out, both are great guitars.
David
