Do i need a SPDT or a DPDT switch for my car lighting?
Id like to have three independent circuits running for different parts of lighting in my car.
One switch position must be constant on connected to a 12v source
A 2nd position must be OFF
A 3rd position will connect to a sound module so that the lights can flash to a music beat
*the 3 individual circuits will be run from a single sound module, but each on their own switch.
This is so, for example, one set of lights can be flashing while the other two are constant on, etc.
Can anyone tell me what type of switch ill need for this? Thanks.
If you want independent control of 3 separate groups of lights you will need 3 separate switches (1 for each lighting circuit). To accomplish ON - OFF - BEAT you will need switches with a center off position (sometimes labeled as ON-OFF-ON). You could use either SPDT or DPDT. The SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw) will have 3 terminals, one of which is marked C or COMMON. The COMMON terminal gets connected to the lighting circuit, either of the other two terminals get connected to +12V and the last gets connected to the sound module. When the switch lever is in the center (OFF) position, the COMMON is not connected to either of the other terminals. When the lever is pushed one way, the COMMON terminal is internally connected to the terminal at the opposite end. A DPDT switch will work just as well since it is just 2 separate SPDT switches built together using a single lever. Instead of 3 terminals it will have 2 rows of 3 terminals, but for your application you would just ignore the second row. A DPDT may cost just slightly more, but that is the only downside.
