Guitar Amp makes hollow/scratchy sound..Help please.?
Peavey Windsor amp head w/slant cab. Trying to get a clean crunch sound and everything sounds hollow and scratchy. Tried different guitars, also tried with a pod xt but still produces these sounds through the effects. Still fairly new at this...usually play thru headphones. Any ideas appreciated!
Thanks dazed. It is a tube amp. And I am using monster cables (told they were quality). I'll try the volume thing first.
Not conversant with this particular amp, is it solid state or valve/tube (depending which side of the Atlantic you live).
You really need to start eliminating stuff to establish where the problem lies.
Firstly, disconnest the guitar and effects from the amp and turn the amp on with nothing attached. Slowly turn it up to max and listen. It will certainly make some noise as it gets to higher levels but it should not be anything too noticable. Try it on all possible settings and channels and see if you have a problem within the amp itself.
Next plug the guitar in but leave the effects out and do the same test. Are you able to get a good clean sound or does that sound hollow and scratchy. Try it with another guitar, does that make a difference?
Finally plug the FX pedal back in and do the same tests.
You should be able to establish where the problem lies.
If I were a betting man I would put money on it being the piece of equipment you have not mentioned that we all take for granted and overlook - cables. A hollow and scratchy sound is almost certainly a poor connection on one of the jack plugs - if you are getting the problem when using the FX it is probably one of the cables connecting the FX unit to the amp. Do yourself a favour and spend some decent money on decent cables - they will last forever if properly looked after and prevent the type of problem you are currently having.
Good luck.
Forgot to say - just realised this is amp head rather than cabinet - PLEASE ensure that the amp is attached to the speaker cab before commencing these tests - playing guitar through a head without speaker cab attached will blow your valves quicker than a very quick thing indeed.
