Electric guitar neck radius?
I've been learning to play electric guitar for a while now and I'm becoming reasonably adept(to my ears!). I've steadily improved the quality of guitars as I've improved and I'm sure enough that I'll stick with it to throw my spare cash at something decent. My only problem is I've got little girl tiny hands! It's true that your hands learn to stretch and twist with practice but no amount of good intention will make my hands big enough to reach the more complicated barre chords. The guitar I have now has a neck radius of 13.5. I prefer Les Paul styles of guitar and the local guitar shops are a bit limited. I want the guitar that I can really make mine so does anyone have any suggestions as to a medium range full size guitar that has a smallish neck radius? Cheers.
The radius is only part of the whole. If you have a small reach you not only want a smaller neck, meaning the width but smaller scale length. Remember, you are not only reaching across the neck but stretching up it as well so the curve/radius plays very little into the equation. Let me restate it this way. It is not only how far across it from the low E to the high E string that will matter but also how much of a stretch it is from one fret to next on the neck that matters..The radius only deals with the curve of the neck on the fretboard. I have a G&L with a very small neck, i.e. I can wrap my hand around it very nicely BUT it still has the same scale length as the strat so when I try to stretch my fingers up the neck as opposed to across it, I have trouble reaching frets that other guys can reach easily. I was used to playing Gibson Les Pauls but started liking the strat sound so I bought a strat but it was more difficult to play as the Scale length is 25 and 1/2 inch making it hard to reach some of the compound chords. So I had Warmoth make a 24 and 3/4 inch neck (same as a les paul) that would bolt onto my strat.Much easier!. One last thing, I don't know if you are familiar with the Fender Mustangs but the scale length on those are even smaller being 24 inch. They are great sounding guitars and very easy to play. I would suggest trying one out at your local store before sinking a lot of money into having a neck made, Good luck finding what works for you.
