How much will it cost to repair my guitars?
okay so i've been looking online around to repair my guitar; the most i'm told it will cost is like 50$.....i'm a new guitarist so i don't know much, my sister broke my guitars so i'm like trying to get it fixed... it's a Dean Humbucker; and a Stratocaster the brand says "Stages 3 by Samick"
the Humbucker needs a new set of strings, new knobs, and when it was used last with the amp it sounded perfectly fine, but now if you plug it in it doesn't work at all
it's as if it just suddenly stopped working..... loose wiring maybe?
it's not my amp because my stratocaster works perfectly fine with the amp
and my stratocaster may need a new strings and maybe a pickup, it works fine but... (noob wording) the little metal parts on the pickup are falling inside if you have any idea what i'm saying..
how much would the Humbucker string set, knobs, repair, the stratocaster pickup and new string set, all cost together do you think?
Hello! Actually, the parts themselves to fix your guitars are not expensive. Strings run less than $5 a set (Ernie Ball, for example), a set of knobs around $15 (see http://www.allparts.com/store/knobs-metal-knobs,Category.asp for examples), and a pickup can be as inexpensive as $25 (see http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Mid-Pickup-Assembly-for-Mexican-Stratocaster-301608-i1127514.gc for one example). Most likely, the problem with your Dean is the input jack wiring or the contact points. Just remove the inspection plate on the rear of the guitar (not sure what specific model you have, but most are equipped this way), and check to see if the wires are broken (or any other wiring in the cavity). In most cases, all that is needed is to wipe a cotton swab dipped in alcohol across the contact surfaces, and then bend the sheet metal tang in slightly to make firmer contact with the plug tip. These jacks do get out-of-kilter even when brand-new, and need maintenance just like everything else on a guitar. If the wiring is broken or loose, it will need re-soldering. Make sure there is no foreign matter inside the jack that is preventing good electrical contact with the plug tip and ring. Guitar wiring is not complicated, and it should be readily apparent where the problem lies. With the Samick, the pole pieces should not be moving inside the pickup itself. What is probably happening is that the pickup has dropped down into the cavity away from the pickup cover, giving the effect of the pole pieces dropping into the guitar. Try tightening the pickup height-adjustment screws first, to see if the pole pieces re-appear. If not, gently push down on the pickup cover (aligning the pole pieces to the cover as you press), to re-seat the cover on the pickup. The last remedy is to remove the pickguard assembly, so that the pickup can be properly oriented relative to the pickguard (the pickup adjustment screws may have come loose from the pickup, see http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ap0azsL0Mk3U5XxHWK15QA3ty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20081114082743AAni9cl&show=7#profile-info-AakYX87Waa for related detail). None of these repairs are difficult, only taking time to complete. There are many on-line videos available to illustrate how to change strings, so this is definitely a do-it-yourself task. Purchasing and replacing the knobs is also a simple exercise. The input jack service and pickup reorientation is a bit more involved, but can still be accomplished with time and patience. Should you not be able to effect the repairs yourself, you can take your guitars to a service technician; unfortunately, you probably would be looking at a $100 labor cost. If you need help with any of what is mentioned here, let me know. Best regards, Dana
