Can anyone explain to me what was mechaniclly wrong with the Toyota gas pedal?
As you have heard, Toyota stopped selling five of their models, mostly high selling ones. They will implement alteration to their gas pedals which was triggered by a fatal accident in California. Each alternation will take about two hours and there will be millions that will have it done. Nice stimulus package from Japan. One thing I admire about the Japanese management style. They take immediate and full responsibility for their mistakes and will do anything to rectify the situation. If this had occurred involving any of our car manufacturers, all you are going to hear will be a series of denials and excuses and will go all out spending millions to deny responsibility in court.
I would not give Toyota a free ride on this or anything for that matter. They have bluffed the world into thinking they have the best quality.
Toyota has known about this problem for quite some time now. Its all related to their new "Drive By Wire" system they introduced around 2007-2008. They know its gonna cost them millions to repair all of these vehicles properly, so they are trying to blame it on everything from operator error, too big of floor mats or too big of a gas peddle. The problem is all computer/electronic related, as these vehicles do not have a cable running from the gas peddle to the throttle body. Instead when you step on the gas it sends out a signal to the throttle telling it to speed up or slow down.
Another thing, Toyotas prized Hybrid, the Prius-they have had hundreds of complaints, mostly related to electrical and battery issues with this car. Consumer reports has a whole section set aside on their website with hundreds of complaints. Read it here:
