A couple of acoustic guitar issues...?
Okay. I've had my guitar for a few months now (since around last July/August) and it's really great, but I have a few quirks with it. It's a Yamaha F325
To start with, it sounds way too loud. If I play it normally, I can hardly hear my own voice, and I'm not a very quiet person. I feel like I'm hitting the strings a bit too hard. I think this may have to do with the picks I use (orange Dunlap Tortex), because they always slip out of my fingers when I'm playing. The gauge of my strings is about .11, and they also feel a bit stiff.
When I play my friends guitar, the strings feel looser and sound softer. So any help here?
The Yamaha F325 is a dreadnought and they tend to be loud since they're so large. For your next guitar get a smaller one like a grand concert size.
I use the red Dunlop tortex picks but I have some orange as well and I've never had a problem holding on to them. I think this may have more to do with your picking technique than with the specific pick you're using but it's certainly cheap enough to buy and try some other brands of picks. There are even picks with grippy material at the top to make it easier to hold on to. You might want to discuss this with your guitar teacher.
You're already using light gauge strings but you might try a coated string which is slightly softer sounding due to the coating. I use and recommend Elixir Nanoweb light gauge acoustic strings. Good luck.
