How much would putting active pickups in my guitar cost?

I just bought a new guitar and wanted to switch out the generic humbucker pups for some Seymour Duncan blackouts and was wondering how much it would cost to have it done at guitar center or at a local shop. i was considering trying it myself but Im afraid that i will end up messing up since i haven't learned anything about switching out pick ups.

The pickups themselves cost $180... closer to $200 if you want the signature pups.

It's really easy if you have active pickups in your guitar. They'll probably have quick-connect wires, which you just plug in and you're done.

If you have passive humbuckers its a pretty big job. Buying the pickups new will guaruntee that you have all the parts. If you buy just the pickups used from someone off ebay, you might not be getting all the parts you need, because they'll probably just send the pickups.

What you need to do is change the output jack over to a stereo jack, put in all new tone and volume pots, solder EVERYTHING onto them, including capacitors, wires and other stuff.

For a good tech, it shouldn't be more than an hour and a half, most of it coming from taking off the strings, putting on new strings, and taking out the old system.

What I did, since they had the guitar there, was I had them setup the guitar for drop C tuning, install the pickups, cleanup the frets and fretboard and setup the guitar, adjusting the truss rod, etc.

I can't remember how much it cost, but it was between the $150 and $180 range, I believe for around 2 hours labor and new strings.. Guitar Center's might have someone there that will do it cheap, but sometimes they have to send them out. What I suggest, is asking them to cut you a deal on labor if you purchase the pickups there. I took mine to a Luthier, so his prices were a little higher than a standard guitar tech.

If all you done is to have them install the new pickups, it will run around $65 to $115 plus the cost of new strings. The reason is that most places will charge a minimum of 1 hours work, even if it takes them 30 minutes, you'll get charged the full hour. Then after 1 hour, they'll prorate for you usually in 15 minute intervals, so if it runs 20 minutes past the first hour, you'll get charged around an 1.5 hours labor. This is why I had them do all the other stuff at once. They had the guitar open and strings off, so it saved me taking it back in to have them do a pro-setup, which is usually around $75 (depending on how much they charge per hour).
